Apologia – (p-lj–, -j) – n. A formal defense or justification.
Apologia is where we get our term, “apology.”
One of the most profound paragraphs in Scripture is 1Pe 3:15-17: “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. It is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.”
Not only are we told to defend Scripture, but the attitude in how to do it — with gentleness and respect. This goes against the grain of today’s “in your face” society, doesn’t it? In the way modern human communications defense operates, whether classroom, courtroom, computer/internet, TV, texting . . . WHERE does ANYONE treat the opposing side with gentleness and respect? This is why as followers of Christ, we’ve been called to a different standard. Even though we may be IN the world, this doesn’t mean we have to be OF the world.
Christian apologetics is a fascinating and exciting field and as such, is best taught by the experts. Below are some names and links to some excellent Christian apologetics resources.
